Get to Know Me

A younger couple, with their small child, crouching in a field with the Squamish Chief behind them.

Hi, I’m Jordi (she/her). I am a Registered Nurse, passionate educator and have been curious about birth and babies for as long as I can remember. At the tender age of 5, I remember taking a deep breath and pretending to push, while watching TLC's "A Baby Story", with my mom.

I graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2013. Since then, I have supported families at home, in small hospitals, big hospitals, clinics in rural Uganda - my experience with childbirth is vast. I started work at the Squamish General Hospital in 2017. The community and the place has stolen my heart and I am so grateful to have found such a beautiful place to work.

I am passionate about the power of education. I was a clinical instructor for the Nursing program at the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College and am a Neonatal Resuscitation Provider instructor - teaching other health care providers how to provide emergency care to neonates at birth.

I have personally experienced both a hospital birth and a home birth - both beautiful, powerful and unique in their own ways. I have witnessed the birth of hundreds and hundreds of babies over the last 12 years. My experience & education allows me the ability to answer questions, create scenarios, encourage, support and reflect with you on your unique journey through pregnancy and postpartum. I can’t wait to work with you!

Offerings

  • Whether you are booking a private or a group session, the content is the same!

    Throughout the first session, we will focus on labour and the birthing process:

    • hormones, stages & flow of labour

    • non-pharmacological and pharmacological pain management

    • the power of the mind during labour and beyond

    • partner support (what is my role?!)

    • navigating the healthcare environment (decision making, question asking & advocacy)

    • understanding vaginal births, assisted births, cesarean births, inductions and other possible interventions

    • Birth preferences and plans (what is your dream birth?)

    • What to expect for your birth depending on location (home & hospital birth)

    Session two focuses on "after the birth" and how to care for the birthing person, your baby and partner during the first six weeks postpartum:

    • Understanding physical healing and your journey through the 4th trimester

    • Infant feeding (breastfeeding, pumping and bottle feeding)

    • Sleep (biologically normal infant sleep, managing expectations, understanding sleep and how to sleep safely)

    • Making a postpartum plan & navigating support from family and friends

    • How to care for your infant (burping, diapers, holding, etc)

    I will provide you with a list of resources and additional videos/education to dig into on your own time, as well as follow up via text or email if you desire!

  • Taking place over 6 hours, we will schedule two, three hour sessions.

    Private prenatal sessions take place in the comfort of your own home.

    I prioritize private sessions for those with complications or unique challenges in pregnancy.

    I will provide you with a list of resources and additional videos/education to dig into on your own time, as well as follow up via text or email if you desire!

    Timing and dates are flexible to each couple and we will collaborate to find times that work for you (evenings, weekends, daytime). I suggest receiving your prenatal education during your third trimester, but please book at your earliest convenience.

    Weekend dates are limited and tend to book up quickly.

    $450 per couple

    Travel fee for couples living in Whistler and Pemberton.

    At this time, e-transfer is the only option for payment.

  • A great opportunity to meet other families with ample time for socializing and connecting with folks who have similar due dates. We will cover the same material as in a private class but with more time for questions and getting to know your amazing new community.

    Day 1 consists of all things labour and birth. Day 2 is focused on the immediate postpartum period and fourth trimester. See “Class Content” above for a full breakdown of the class.

  • I have a special interest in guiding folks through labour who are experiencing high blood pressure, diabetes, induction or are considering TOLAC/VBAC (vaginal birth after cesareans).

    We will focus on advocacy, education and prepping your mind and body for labour.

    Perhaps this is your second pregnancy and you do not need a full prenatal education series, but just a few hours to go over things.

    Cost: $75 per hour (typically we start with a two hour session)

  • Are you at the end of your pregnancy and feeling anxious or nervous? Do you feel like you need someone to talk to who really understands pregnancy and birth and won’t judge you? Or are you newly postpartum and want to debrief your birth? Do you have a desire to chat with someone who can help you to make sense of something that happened?

    Let’s go on a walk! Babies and dogs are more than welcome.

    Reciprocity is up to you - whatever you decide will go directly towards helping me support low resource families who are in need of prenatal education.

My hope is that our time together will:

  • carve out precious time for you and your partner to talk, ponder, question & discuss all things birth & the fourth trimester;

  • provide you with foundational knowledge from an experienced nurse; you can decide if you want to explore more (I will provide a list of resources to explore);

  • create a safe space to ask questions so that you truly understand labour, birth and the immediate postpartum period;

  • give you an understanding of how the Squamish General Hospital maternity unit flows (what to expect when having your baby at SGH);

  • and get you EXCITED about this incredible adventure.

Testimonials

  • “We took Jordi’s two classes in our home at 29 and 30 weeks pregnant. Jordi was accommodating, respectful, compassionate, and flexible in her lessons, and we could tell she worked tirelessly to help us feel supported. Having her come to our home was above and beyond helpful, and we would recommend her and her vast knowledge without hesitation to anyone seeking quality prenatal education”

    - C.H & M.H

  • "We highly recommend doing a prenatal class with Jordi. She has a very calming presence and can answer ALL the questions you might have in regards to giving birth and caring for a newborn baby. She came to our house and walked us through all the things we needed to know. It felt more like chatting with a "baby-knowledgeable" friend than an actual class, especially given all the laughter we shared during the two days. It also really helps that she works at the Squamish hospital, so she can provide you with more inside knowledge and details as to what the day(s) will look like. We even had the pleasure to have her be our nurse for one day during delivery. Couldn't recommend her enough!"

  • “We so enjoyed Jordi’s pre-natal course. We really appreciated how evidence-based and non-judgemental/inclusive it was. Jordi’s experience as a practicing labour and delivery nurse meant that her guidance was so practical and current. We valued the focus on both labour and delivery AND bringing baby home. We felt reasonably knowledgeable going into the course, and came out really impressed with how much we learned and took away from the sessions! Highly recommend.”

    - K & A

  • "My husband and I decided to book Jordi’s private birthing class to get some insight into our first pregnancy, and I can’t speak her praise enough. With all the noise out there online and unsolicited advice for soon-to-be parents, it was absolutely amazing to get calm, collected insight of what to expect with labour/birth, partner support, what options or paths can pop up, and a second class to go over some basics of bringing home a new baby/feeding/sleeping and mental health. She really helped us get into a place where we feel confident moving into the last month of this pregnancy and preparing for the final leg with evidence-based backing from her occupation (literally from someone who sees this stuff at work all week). So kind, funny, and a joy to learn from!"

  • "I found Jordi and her prenatal classes during my first pregnancy and I could not recommend her more! The class was incredibly informative and helped me feel confident and prepared for childbirth and parenting. Jordi is incredibly supportive and approachable - it's SUCH a bonus when you run into her as your nurse at your birth. I walked away with practical tools to help me through the birth of my son, a clear understanding of what to expect and a feeling of confidence that I could handle anything coming my way. As a first time mom, there's no better way to learn than from Jordi."

    T.H

  • "Before we took the class with Jordi, we were feeling a bit overwhelmed and unsure about what to expect during the birthing process. Jordi's warmth, knowledge, and calm presence made all the difference. She answered all our questions with kindness and never made us feel judged. It was also so comforting to meet other families going through the same journey. Jordi is a natural teacher, and the class was both insightful and uplifting. We're so grateful for the experience and highly recommend Fireside Prenatal to anyone seeking support, understanding and a truly caring environment during pregnancy."

    M.L

  • "We attended Jordi's group prenatal weekend course and felt it had a pivotal impact on our approach to the birth and care of our baby. Jordi's teaching approach was thoughtful and invited lots of engagement and discussion. She explained things clearly and covered alot of content in just two sessions. We also got to meet other parents due around the same time as us which allowed us to build a great network around Squamish. We love bumping into Jordi around town and consider her a friend now. Would recommend this class to any expecting parent!"
